The initial part of First Chapter begins with prayers and introduces the Divine Lineage of the wisdom of Ayurveda.
This describes how ancient sages noticed the increasing tendency of attracting disorders in common people and then held a symposium in Himalayan region and decided to bring Ayurveda wisdom for the masses.

” Athāto vātakalākalīyamadhyāyaṃ vyākhyāsyāmaḥ || 1||”

” vātakalākalājῆānamadhikṛtya parasparamatāni jijῆvsamānāḥ smupaviśya maharṣayāḥ papracchuranyonyaṃkiṃ guṇo vāyuḥ kimasaya prakopaṇam, upaśamanāni vāsya kāni, kathaṃ cainamasaṃghātavantamanavasthitamanāsādha prakopaṇāpraśamanāni prakopayanti praśamyanti vā; kāni cāsya kupitākupitasya sarīrāśarīracarasya śarīreṣu carataṃ karmāṇi bahiḥśarīrebhyo veti || 3||”

” Atrovāca kuśaḥ sāṅkutyāyanaḥ rūkṣalaghuśītadārūṇakharaviśadaḥ ṣaḍime vātaguṇā bhavanti || 4||”

” Tacchrutvā kākyaṃ kumāraśirā bharadvāja uvāca-evametad yathā bhagavānāha, eta eva vātaguṇā bhavanti, sa tvevaṃguṇairevaṃdravyairevaṃprabhāvaiśca karmabhirabhyasyamānairvāyuḥ prakopamāpadhate, samānaguṇābhyāso hi dhātūnāṃ vṛaddhikāraṇamiti || 5||”

” Tacchrutvā vākyaṃ kāṃkāyano vāhvīkabhiṣaguvāca-evametad yathā bhagavānāhāh, etānyeva vātaprakopāṇāni bhavanti, ato viparītāni vātasya praśamanāni bhavanti. Prakopaṇaviparyayo hi dhātūnāṃ praśamakāraṇamiti || 6||”

” Tacchrutavā vākayaṃ baḍiśo dhāmārgava uvāca-etametad yathā bhagavānāha, etānyeva vātaprakopapraśamanāni bhavanti | yathā hyenamasaṃghātamanavasthitamanāsadha prakopaṇapraśamanāni prakopayanti praśamayanti vā, tathānuvyākhyāsyāmaḥ-vātaprakopaṇāni khalu rukṣalaghuśītadāruṇakharaviśadaśuṣirakarāṇi, śarīraṇāṃ, tathāviśeṣu śarīreṣu vāyurāśrayaṃ gatvāpyāyamānaḥ prakopamāpadhate; vātapraśamanāni punaḥ sinagdhagurūśṇaśalakṣṇamṛdu picchilaghanakarāṇi śarīrāṇāṃ tathāvidheśu vāyurasatyamānaścaran praśāntimāpadhate || 7|| “

“Tacchrutvā baḍiśavacanamavitathamṛṣigaṇairanumatamuvāca vāryovido rājarṣiḥ evametat sarvamanapavādaṃ yathā bhagavānāha | yāni tu khalu vāyoḥ kupitākupitasya śarīrāśarīracarasya sarīreṣu carataḥ karmāṇi bahiḥśarīrebhyo vā bhavanti, teṣāmavayavān pratyakṣānumānopadeśaiḥ sādhiyatvā namaskṛtya vāyave yathāsakti pravakṣyāmaḥvāyustantrayantradharaḥ; prāṇodānasamānavyānāpānātmā, pravatrakaśceṣṭānāmuccāvacānāṃ niyantā, praṇetā ca manasaḥ, sarvendriyāṇamudhojakaḥ, sarvaśarīradhātuvyūhakaraḥ, sandhānakaraḥ śarīrasya, pravartako prakṛtiḥ sparśaśabdayoḥ, śrotrasparśanayormūlaṃ, harṣotsāhayoryoniḥ samīraṇogneḥ, doṣasaṃśoṣaṇaḥ, kṣeptā bahirmalāṇāṃ, sdhūlāṇusrotasāṃ bhettā, kartā garbhākṛtīnām, āyuṣonuvṛttipratyayabhūto bhavatyakupitaḥ | Kupitastu khalu śarīre śarīraṃ nānāvidhairvikārairūpatapati balavarṇasukhāyuṣāmupaghātāya; mano vyāharṣyati, sarvendriyāṇyupahanti, vinihanti garbhan vikṛtimāpādayatyatikālaṃ vā dhārayati, bhayaṣokamohadainyātipralāpāῆjapayati, prāṇāṃścoparuṇaddhi | Prakṛtibhūtasya khalvasya loke carataḥ karmāṇīmāni bhavanti, tadhathādharaṇīdhāraṇaṃ jvalanojjvālanam, ādityacandranakṣatragrahaṇānāṃ santānagatividhānaṃ, sṛṣṭiśca medhānām apāṃ visargaḥ, pravartanaṃ srotasāṃ puṣpaphalānāṃ cābhinirvartanam, udbhedanaṃ caudbhidānām, ṛtūnāṃ pravibhāgaḥ vibhāgo dhātūnāṃ dhātumānasaṃsthānavyaktiḥ, bījābhisaskāṃraḥ, śasyābhivardhanamavikledopaśoṣaṇe avaikārikavikāraśceti | prakutitasya khalvasya lokeṣu carataḥ karmāṇimāni bhavanti; tadhathā – śikhariśikharāvamanthanam, unmathanamanokahānām, utpīḍanaṃ sāgarāṇām, udvartanaṃ sarasāṃ, pratisaraṇamāpagānām, ākampanaṃ ca bhūmeḥ, ādhamanamambudānāṃ, nīhāranirhrādapāṃśusikatāmatsyabhekoragakṣārarūdhirāśmāśani- visargaḥ, vyāpādanaṃ ca ṣaṣṇāmṛtunāṃ, śasyānāmasaṃghātaḥ, bhūtānāṃ copasargaḥ, bhāvānāṃ cābhāvakaraṇaṃ, caturyaugāntakarāṇāṃ medhasūryānalānilanāṃ visargaḥ | sa hi bhagavān prabhavaśrvyayaśca, bhūtānāṃ bhāvābhāvakaraḥ, sukhāsukhyorvidhātā, mṛtyuḥ, yamaḥ, niyantā, prajāpatiḥ, aditiḥ, viśvakarmā, viśvarūpaḥ, sarvatantrāṇāṃ vidhātā; bhāvānāmaṇuḥ, vibhuḥ, viṣṇuḥ ,krāntā lokānāṃ, vāyureva bhagavāniti || 8||”

” Tacchrutvā varyovidavaco marīcirūvāca-yadhapyevametat, kimarthasyāsya vacane vijῆāne vā sāmarthyamasti bhiṣagvidhāyāṃ bhiṣagvidhāmadhikṛtyeyaṃ kathā pravatteti || 9||”

” vāryovida uvāca-bhiṣak pavanamatibalamatiparūṣamatiśīghrakāriṇamātyayikaṃ cennānuniśamyet, sahasā prakupitamatiprayataḥ kathamagrebhirakṣitumabhidhāsyati prāgevainamatyayabhayāt;vāyoryathārthā stutirapi bhavatyārogyāya balavarṇavivṛddhaye varcasvatvāyopacayāya jῆānopapattye paramāyuḥprakarṣāya ceti || 10|| ||

” Marīcirūvāca- -agnireva śarīre pittāntargataḥ kupitākupitaḥ śubhāśubhāni karoti; tadhathāpaktimapaktiṃ darśanamadarśanaṃ mātrāmātratvamūṣmaṇaḥ prakṛtivikṛtivarṇo śairya bhayaṃ krodhaṃ harṣa mohaṃ prasādāmityevamādini cāparāni dvandvānīti
|| 11||”

” Tacchrutvā marīcivacaḥ kāpya uvāca-soma eva śarīre śleṣmāntargataḥ kupitākupitaḥ śubhāśubhāni karoti; tadhthā-daḍharya śaithilyamupacayaṃ kāśryamutsāhamālasyaṃ vṛṣatāṃ klībatāṃ jῆānamajῆānaṃ burddhi mohamityevamādīni cāparāṇi dvandvānīti || 12||”

” Tacchrutvā kāpyavaco bhagavān punarvasurātreya uvāca- -sarvaeva bhavantaḥ samyagāhuranyatraikāntikavacanāt; sarva eva khalu vātapittaśleṣmāṇāḥ prakṛtibhūtāḥ purūṣamavyāpannendriyaṃ balavarṇasukhopapannamāyuṣā mahatopapādayanti samyagevāciritā darmārthakāmā iva vikrtimāpannā lokamaśubhenopadhātakāla iti || 13||”

” Tadṛṣayaḥ sarva evānumenire vacanamātreyasya bhagavataḥ, abhinananduśceti || 14|| “

” Tadātreyavacaḥ śrutvā sarva evānumenire | ṛṣayobhinananduśca yathendravacanaṃ surāḥ || 15||”

” Guṇāḥ ṣaṅ dvividho heturvividhaṃ karma yatpunaḥ | vāyoścaturvidhaṃ karma pṛthak ca kaphapittayoḥ || 16||”

” Maharṣiṇāṃ matiryā yā punrvasumatiśca yā | kalākalīye vātasya tat sarva samprakāśitam || 17||”

” Itiyagniveśakṛte tantre carakapratisaṃsakṛte sūtrasthāne nirdeśacatuṣke vātakalākalīyo nāma dvādaśodhyāyaḥ || 12||”
